MSDS Certification Introduction

MSDS is a comprehensive legal document about the characteristics of chemicals provided to customers by chemical manufacturers or sellers according to legal requirements. MSDS can be prepared by manufacturers according to relevant rules. However, in order to ensure the accuracy and standardization of the report, you can apply to professional organizations to prepare.

MSDS is used by chemical product manufacturers and importers to identify the relevant characteristics of chemicals, but also to a certain extent, the product may be hazardous to the health of the user of a document, to a certain extent to reduce occupational hazards, but also to prevent chemical accidents, at present in the United States, Japan, the European Union and other developed countries have been commonly implemented MSDS system.

The scope of use of MSDS

Some people think that only dangerous chemicals need to handle MSDS, but this is not the case, the current requirements for MSDS (SDS) report abroad is more stringent, has been extended to almost all chemicals, even some plastics, metals, textile products, exports to developed countries and a large part of the chemicals and daily necessities are now basically required to have MSDS (SDS) in order to smooth customs clearance, some foreign Some foreign purchasers will also ask for MSDS(SDS), and some domestic foreign enterprises or joint ventures will also ask for this.

MSDS requirements

MSDS requirements are described in paragraph (g) of 29 CFR 1910.1200 (click to see the full text of the regulation), MSDS must be developed for hazardous chemicals used in the workplace and must list the amount of hazardous chemicals found in the product as 1% or higher, or 0.1% or higher if the chemical is a carcinogen; MSDS need not list the amount of hazardous chemicals in the product content of the product, specifically.

Content of MSDS

The American Standards Institute ANSI and ISO recommend the following MSDS contents:

Item 1: Chemical name and manufacturer information

Second item: chemical composition information

The third item: hazard information

Item 4: First-aid measures

Item 5: Fire protection measures

Item 6: Emergency treatment for leakage

Item 7: Handling and Storage

Item 8: Exposure control and personal protective measures

Item IX: physical and chemical properties

Item 10: stability and reactivity

Item 11: Toxicological information

Item 12: ecological information

Item XIII: waste disposal

Item 14: transport information

Item 15: Regulatory information

Item 16: Other information

When do I need to provide SDS/MSDS?

Product suppliers are required to compile SDSs to pass down the supply chain to importers, downstream users and distributors when the product meets one of the following conditions:

1. when the substance or preparation is classified as hazardous according to Directive 67/548/EEC or 1999/45/EC, or, the preparation is not classified as hazardous but contains a certain percentage of substances of very high concern (SVHC*) or other hazardous components;

2. the substance is persistent, bioaccumulative, toxic (PBT) or highly persistent, highly bioaccumulative (vPvB) according to the criteria in Annex 13 of the REACH regulation

3. the substance is determined to be SVHC for reasons other than those listed above;

In addition, although the above conditions are not met, companies are required to pass SDS in their supply chain when the importer takes the initiative to provide it, or when the same industry is more stringent on substance classification and labeling.
