On May 11, 2022, the European Union officially released a new standard for electric power mountain bikes EN 17404:2022, which will be officially published and implemented before November 2022.
The Mountain Electric Assist bike, abbreviated as EPAC-MTB by standard, is designed for off-road use on rough terrain, public roads and public trails, with appropriately reinforced frames and other components, such as wide tires with rough tread and a wide range of change gears.
The physical mechanical and electrical parts of EN 17404:2022 are carried out in accordance with the corresponding test methods of EN 15194:2017, with the addition of a waterproofing class in accordance with the IPX5 requirements of EN 60529:1991. Some of the physical test items are in accordance with the test methods and requirements of EN ISO 4210-2:2015. Mountain electric bicycles need to be designed in accordance with the principles of EN ISO 12100 and their risk assessment.
